Challenge: Despite federal, state, and local efforts, the No Child Left Behind Act (NCLBA) has fallen short of its noble intentions.
Our schools must be held accountable for the quality of education they provide our children, and the federal government has an obligation to provide local schools with the resources they need to meet any new demands that Congress imposes on them.
The No Child Left Behind Act (NCLBA) standards, implemented in 2001, need to be reviewed and reformed to ensure that our children have the tools they need to be successful in school and ultimately in life. I will work to modify the scope of NCLBA to better evaluate and support our rural school districts.
Experiential learning can be just as effective as structured learning in the classroom. NCLBA should give teachers the flexibility to give their students opportunities outside of the classroom to experience their lessons in real life. Ensure there is an open dialogue between the state and federal Departments of Education.
Pennsylvania still lags behind many other states in terms of quality education. Math and reading scores are lower than the national average and many children, especially in rural areas, lack access to quality books, resources, and programs.
Develop stronger Math and Reading programs and provide incentives and rewards to schools that achieve higher test scores and graduation rates.
Develop stronger Arts and Science programs and provide incentives and rewards to schools that achieve higher test scores and graduation rates.
Increase access and usage of technology in the schools to better prepare our students for success in the new global economy.
